The Norton Women’s & Children’s Labor & Delivery – St. Matthews Unit

Every birth experience is unique, and our labor and delivery teams are here to support you with personalized care, comfort and expertise every step of the way. The labor and delivery unit at Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital is designed to provide a safe, comfortable and supportive environment for you, your baby and your family during one of life’s most important moments.

Each year, our teams help welcome more than 9,000 babies, caring for women with both routine and high-risk pregnancies. From early labor through delivery and recovery, experienced nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives work together to support your birth preferences.

Getting Here

The entrance to the Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital’s labor and delivery unit is located on the second floor of Norton St. Matthews Medical Plaza 3 at 4123 Dutchmans Lane. From the entrance to Plaza 3, take the gold elevators to the second floor. Proceed to the admission desk for the labor and delivery unit.

Patient drop-off is available at the entrance to the medical plaza. Free valet parking is available Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the building entrance and at the main hospital entrance.

Free parking is located at Entrance 4 from Dutchmans Lane, near the intersection with Browns Lane, or in the surface parking lot next to the medical plaza. TARC Routes 19 and 23 serve the Norton Healthcare – St. Matthews campus.

You’ll be supported continuously, and your nurse will monitor both you and your baby throughout labor.

Yes. You’ll have access to maternal–fetal medicine specialists who manage high-risk pregnancies and complex conditions, working closely with your care team.

Yes. The hospital has a Level III NICU for babies who need specialized care.

If more advanced treatment is required, babies can be cared for at the nearby Level IV NICU at Norton Children’s Hospital, which offers the highest level of neonatal care in the region.

Yes. The hospital offers the AngelEye camera system, which allows you to securely view your baby remotely 24/7 if you can’t be at the bedside.

Yes. Norton Women’s Care offers:

  • Free childbirth (Lamaze) classes
  • Breastfeeding support
  • New parent education
  • Child safety classes

These resources are designed to help you feel prepared before and after delivery.

Yes. Lactation consultants are part of the care team and are available to help with:

  • Latching and positioning
  • Milk supply questions
  • Ongoing breastfeeding support

Yes. The hospital supports additional birth partners, including doulas, and even offers access to a doula program.

If a cesarean delivery becomes necessary, the hospital has:

  • 24/7 surgical and anesthesia teams
  • Immediate access to specialists
  • Coordinated care for both mother and baby

C-sections are recommended only when medically necessary.

After delivery, you’ll receive:

  • Monitoring of your recovery
  • Education on newborn care
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Discharge instructions to help you transition home

Yes. You can schedule tours of the labor and delivery unit or NICU, and virtual tours also may be available to help you prepare.

What if I don't have insurance?

Copays or fees are typically due at the time of service. If you have insurance, your copay amount will depend on your plan. For self-pay patients, the cost of a visit typically ranges from $100 to $250, depending on the services provided. There may be additional charges for services such as lab tests or X-rays.
