Anyone can have challenges at any point in their lives. The difference is how these issues are addressed and perceived. These differences are glaringly obvious in African American communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-mental-health-affects-black-communities\">How mental health affects Black communities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hear often that Black Americans view mental health struggles as a personal weakness,\u201d said Jonathon White, LCSW, a social worker with Norton Behavioral Medicine. \u201cOr they don\u2019t believe mental health struggles even exist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statistics are stark:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>African Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/find-support\/diverse-communities\/african-americans\">10% more likely to experience serious psychological distress<\/a>.<\/li><li>Black adult blacks living below the poverty line report severe psychological distress two to three times more often than those living above it.<\/li><li>Black adults are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letserasethestigma.com\/african-american-communities\">more likely to have feelings<\/a> of sadness, hopelessness and worthlessness than white adults.<\/li><li>Lack of access to behavioral health resources such as health care, education and economic resources, may contribute to African Americans\u2019 worse mental health outcomes.<\/li><li>Black teens are more likely to attempt suicide than white teenagers, and African Americans of all ages are more likely to be victims of violent crime; meaning they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letserasethestigma.com\/african-american-communities\">higher incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a> (PTSD).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"card card-callout float-xl-end ms-xl-3  w-xl-35 \">\n\t<div class=\"card-body\">\n\t\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find Primary Care <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you&#8217;re looking to discuss depression or anxiety issues, you can depend on the team at Norton Community Medical Associates. It\u2019s important that providers understand these barriers and work to overcome them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/patient-resources\/norton-now\/mental-health\/\">Mental health is as important as physical health. If you need mental health help, here are some things you should know.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barriers to behavioral health care for Black individuals include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Economics.<\/strong> According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2012, 19% of African Americans did not have health insurance.<\/li><li><strong>Physical access.<\/strong> Black communities are often far from hospitals or clinics that provide mental health services.<\/li><li><strong>Lack of clinical trials.<\/strong> Barriers such as lack of awareness, economic factors, communication issues and mistrust often lead to underreported racial demographic data.<\/li><li><strong>Mistrust.<\/strong> A history of racism in medical settings can result in a serious lack of trust in medical professionals.<\/li><li><strong>Lack of providers who are Black.<\/strong> According to the American Psychiatric Association, only 3.7% of its members are African American.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-can-be-done-about-access-for-minorities-to-health-care-services\">What can be done about access for minorities to health care services?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom a patient standpoint, you should visit a primary care provider,\u201d Jonathon said. \u201cYour provider will help screen your symptoms and take the first step in creating a plan to ensure you have the best quality of life.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norton Behavioral Medicine offers outpatient mental health care in Kentucky and Indiana that is integrated with the ongoing care provided by your Norton Healthcare primary care provider or specialist.
