{"id":1130924,"date":"2023-06-23T11:10:28","date_gmt":"2023-06-23T15:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/?post_type=service&#038;p=1130924"},"modified":"2026-04-10T15:29:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T19:29:19","slug":"preeclampsia","status":"publish","type":"service","link":"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/obstetrics-and-gynecology\/services\/womens-health\/preeclampsia\/","title":{"rendered":"Preeclampsia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preeclampsia is a disorder that affects 5% to 8% of pregnancies in the United States. Signs and symptoms of preeclampsia usually occur after the 20th week of pregnancy up until your due date. The condition also can occur after delivery up until six weeks postpartum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diagnosis of preeclampsia is made by your obstetric provider. It can occur in a spectrum, from just an elevation in blood pressure, up to maternal seizures called eclampsia. Preeclampsia is diagnosed by a finding of an elevation of blood pressure after the 20th week of pregnancy with or without protein present in the urine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signs-of-preeclampsia\">Signs of preeclampsia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While a majority of patients with preeclampsia will have healthy babies and fully recover, a few will experience severe complications. Because the condition can progress rapidly, early recognition of preeclampsia signs and symptoms could save your life and the life of your baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symptoms of preeclampsia can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Headaches<\/li><li>Upper abdominal pain<\/li><li>Shortness of breath<\/li><li>Chest pain<\/li><li>Visual disturbances such as flashes of light or very blurred vision<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you experience any of these symptoms, you should contact your health care provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-at-risk-for-preeclampsia\">Who Is at Risk for Preeclampsia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have any of the risk factors below, talk with your health care provider about prevention strategies for preeclampsia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preexisting conditions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Diabetes<\/li><li>Kidney disease<\/li><li>Hypertension<\/li><li>Lupus<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other risk factors can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>First pregnancy<\/li><li>Multiples (twins, triplets, quadruplets)<\/li><li>History of preeclampsia<\/li><li>Maternal age over 35<\/li><li>Obesity (a body mass index over 30)<\/li><li>Persons of color<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-preeclampsia-treatment\">Preeclampsia Treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Primary treatment for preeclampsia is careful observation of the mother, along with symptom management. If symptoms persist and get more severe, or do not respond to medication or intervention, you and your health care provider may decide to deliver the baby early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/obstetrics-and-gynecology\/\">Norton Women\u2019s Care<\/a> offers a complete range of services with an emphasis on caring for the whole woman \u2014 mind, body and spirit.
