Most women don\u2019t get breast cancer, and not all women with the risk factors develop breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing your breast cancer risk allows you to address breast cancer risk factors related to lifestyle. You also can be more vigilant about <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/cancer-care\/services\/breast-cancer\/prevention-and-detection\/\">breast cancer prevention and early detection<\/a> if you are aware of your cancer risk from a family history or other risk factors that you can\u2019t control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breast self-exams can be lifesaving, especially for younger women who aren\u2019t ready for regular breast cancer screening mammograms. Women ages 40 and older may be ready to start getting an <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/obstetrics-and-gynecology\/services\/womens-health\/breast-health-and-mammogram\/\">annual mammogram<\/a>. Guidelines depend on your age and other risk factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinical breast health exams, in which a health care provider checks for lumps and changes, can provide an early warning sign. Taking note of how your breasts feel and look can help make lumps, pain, size changes or other variations more noticeable. Discuss any changes with your medical provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some with a <a href=\"\/services-and-conditions\/breast-health-program\/high-risk-breast-cancer\/\">high breast cancer risk<\/a>, a breast MRI scan in conjunction with a mammogram may help detect cancer. Many Norton Healthcare breast radiologists have specialized training in breast radiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-high-risk-for-breast-cancer\">High Risk for Breast Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-family-history-and-genetic-mutations\">Family History and Genetic Mutations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, or certain inherited genetic mutations, you may be at higher risk for developing breast cancer. If you are at high risk, you have options regarding early detection, screening, and possible next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many, risk is influenced by family history. If a close relative like a parent, sibling, or child has had breast cancer, your risk is greater. Certain genetic mutations, such as changes in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, also can significantly increase your lifetime <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/breast\/basic_info\/risk_factors.htm\">risk for breast cancer<\/a> and possibly <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/cancer-care\/services\/ovarian-cancer\/\">ovarian cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While having these risk factors doesn\u2019t guarantee you\u2019ll develop cancer, it may mean that you could benefit from genetic counseling, earlier screening, or other proactive steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dense-breast-tissue\">Dense Breast Tissue<\/h4>\n\n\n \n    <div class=\"row\">\n      <div class=\"col-xl-8 mx-auto\">\n        <div class=\"ratio ratio-16x9 my-5\">\n          <iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4KMTd8ilQyU\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The high level of connective tissue, rather than fatty tissue, in dense breasts can make it difficult to spot tumors on a mammogram. It can be difficult to distinguish between a small tumor and dense breast tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dense breast tissue also carries an increased risk of breast cancer, although breast cancer patients with dense breast tissue are not more likely to die of breast cancer than patients with fatty breast tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists don\u2019t yet understand the link between breast density and a higher risk of breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Previous Radiation Therapy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients who receive radiation to the chest or breasts before age 30 to treat conditions such as Hodgkin lymphoma have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Radiation to the face as an adolescent to treat acne is also associated with a high risk for breast cancer later in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you had radiation therapy while your breasts were developing in adolescence, your risk is higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moderate Breast Cancer Risk Factors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Previous Breast Cancer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A personal history of breast cancer carries a moderate risk of developing breast cancer in the other breast or elsewhere in the same breast. This is different from a recurrence of developing breast cancer in the same site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benign Breast Lesion History<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain benign breast lesions, such as atypical ductal hyperplasia or lobular carcinoma in situ, are a risk factor for developing breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overweight or Obesity<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overweight or obesity in postmenopausal women is a risk factor for breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lesser Risk Factors for Breast Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hormone Replacement Therapy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Menopausal hormone therapy that involves estrogen and progesterone for more than five years can raise risk for breast cancer. Certain birth control pills also have been found to raise breast cancer risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcareprovider.com\/news\/menopausal-hormone-therapy-and-breast-cancer\/\">A 2020 study<\/a> estimated that combined estrogen-progesterone therapy would mean nine additional breast cancer cases per 10,000 for younger individuals and an additional 36 per 10,000 for older individuals per year. The study showed taking estrogen and progesterone for more than five years results in a significant increase in breast cancer risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early Menstruation and Late Menopause<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting menstrual periods before age 12 and starting menopause after age 55 expose women to hormones longer, resulting in an increased risk for breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Delayed Childbirth or Not Having Children<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A first pregnancy after age 30, not breastfeeding and never having a full-term pregnancy can raise breast cancer risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alcohol<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more alcohol you drink, the higher your risk for breast cancer. The body breaks down alcohol into acetaldehyde, which damages your DNA and prevents your body from repairing the damage. Damaged DNA can allow a cell to grow out of control into cancer cells and create a tumor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Breast Cancer Risk Factors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are risk factors for breast cancer you can control, and some you can\u2019t. Risks outside your control include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Assigned female at birth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over age 50<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal history of breast cancer or certain other breast conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early menstruation or late menopause<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Risks that you have some control over include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lack of physical activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birth control pills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having first full-term pregnancy after age 30, not breastfeeding and never having a
