Reconstruction may be performed at the same time or delayed, based on patient preference and health factors.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, when it\u2019s compatible with your diagnosis and treatment, the surgeon may perform one of the following incision options during a mastectomy:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Skin-sparing Mastectomy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A skin-sparing mastectomy preserves most of the breast skin to allow for easier reconstruction. This technique often is used when <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/plastic-reconstructive-surgery\/breast-reconstruction\/\">breast reconstruction<\/a> is planned immediately after surgery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nipple-sparing Mastectomy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A nipple-sparing mastectomy removes all breast tissue but leaves the nipple and surrounding skin intact. It involves injection of radioactive tracer and\/or blue dye.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Axillary Lymph Node Dissection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This removes <u>all (or nearly all)<\/u>\u00a0the lymph nodes under the arm and <u>is recommended in certain types or stages of breast cancer. <\/u>The number of lymph nodes involved helps determine how far cancer has spread and guides treatment decisions.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n   <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supportive Procedures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-office-procedures\">In-office Procedures<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all breast concerns require surgery in an operating room.
