It can provide a bridge to longer-term therapy such as a heart transplant or mechanical support, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/heart-and-vascular-care\/treatments\/vad\/\">ventricular assist device<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ECMO is a temporary form of life support. It uses a machine outside the body to pump and oxygenate blood. <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonchildrens.com\/services\/cardiology\/programs\/pediatric-ecmo\/\">Norton Children\u2019s Heart Institute <\/a>also uses ECMO to support pediatric patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ECMO helps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support patients with severe respiratory failure who are not improving on a ventilator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide emergency support for patients in cardiogenic shock or cardiac arrest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bridge patients to recovery, transplant, or longer-term mechanical support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"card card-callout  mx-auto w-xl-50 my-5\">\n\t<div class=\"card-body\">\n\t\t\n\n<p class=\"lead wp-block-paragraph\">The ECMO programs at Norton Heart &amp; Vascular Institute and Norton Children\u2019s Heart Institute are each recognized by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) as gold-level centers of excellence. As ELSO centers of excellence, the programs\u2019 processes, procedures and systems promote excellence and exceptional ECMO care.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-types-of-ecmo-treatment\">Types of ECMO Treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Venovenous (VV ECMO) for lung support. In this configuration, the ECMO machine takes blood from a vein and passes it through a cannula (reinforced tube), oxygenates and removes carbon dioxide, then returns it to a vein for circulation. This approach is used to treat respiratory failure when there isn\u2019t significant heart failure. This includes conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, severe pneumonia or severe hypoxemia (low oxygen levels).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Venoarterial (VA ECMO) for heart and lung support. With this ECMO circuit, the ECMO machine takes blood from a vein, oxygenates it and pumps it into an artery to the rest of the body \u2014 providing pulmonary and cardiac support. VA ECMO is used to treat a wide range of severe heart conditions, including heart failure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-team-approach-to-critical-care\">A Team Approach to Critical Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norton Heart &amp; Vascular Institute\u2019s highly trained ECMO team is available 24\/7 to respond quickly when conventional treatments are no longer enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Team members focus on providing safe, effective care while supporting patients and families through every step of the journey.
