It\u2019s a day dedicated to raising awareness about health, safety and mortality issues that continue to affect women before, during and after childbirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kentucky and Indiana rank among the worst states for maternal mortality, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/peristats\/data?reg=99&amp;top=6&amp;stop=370&amp;lev=1&amp;slev=4&amp;obj=35&amp;sreg=21\">March of Dimes<\/a>\u2019s 2018 to 2022 data listing. Kentucky is the fifth worst, with a rate of 34.6 deaths per 100,000; while Indiana is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/peristats\/data?top=6&amp;lev=1&amp;stop=370&amp;reg=99&amp;sreg=18&amp;obj=35&amp;slev=4\">ninth worst<\/a> at 30.9. Each year, nearly 52,000 babies are born in Kentucky and around 79,000 in Indiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maternal health includes pregnancy but also the first year after delivery. In Kentucky, 90% of maternal deaths are considered preventable and 58% happen between 43 days and one year after delivery, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chfs.ky.gov\/agencies\/dph\/dmch\/Documents\/MMRAnnualReport2024.pdf\">Kentucky Department of Public Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost people think maternal health means only while patients are pregnant or in the hospital after delivering,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.nortonhealthcare.com\/provider\/r-paige-walker\/477014\">R. Paige Walker, M.D.<\/a>, gynecologist, Norton Women\u2019s Specialists. \u201cWe can help patients have a safe and healthy delivery, but we need the community\u2019s help after that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a>Three things the community can do:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be aware of the risks leading to maternal health issues: high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, obesity, substance abuse and older age during pregnancy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know the warning signs of issues during and after pregnancy, including fever, severe or repeated headaches, and intense stomach pain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay attention to women\u2019s mental health before, during and after pregnancy \u2014 especially depression and anxiety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn Kentucky especially, <a>a factor in 51% of maternal deaths was substance abuse<\/a>,\u201d Dr. Walker said. \u201cGetting pregnant women help through a stabilization program can help prevent issues later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An option for this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/obstetrics-and-gynecology\/patient-resources\/maternal-opiate-substance-treatment\/\">Norton Maternal Opiate Substance Treatment (MOST) Program<\/a>, which provides hospital stabilization\/detoxification (detox) services and an outpatient recovery program for pregnant patients with substance use disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When choosing where to receive prenatal care and deliver a baby, it\u2019s good to ask what safety precautions are in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/obstetrics-and-gynecology\/services\/pregnancy\/\">Norton Women\u2019s Care<\/a> consistently works to improve maternal health through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An ongoing initiative to reduce cesarean section deliveries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Procedures to quickly treat patients who experience hypertension and hemorrhage emergencies after delivery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around-the-clock obstetric specialists at <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/location\/loc0000192064\/\">Norton Hospital<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/location\/loc0000197298\/\">Norton Women\u2019s &amp; Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/obstetrics-and-gynecology\/services\/pregnancy\/labor-and-delivery\/doula\/\">Doulas<\/a>, made possible thanks to support from Aetna Better Health of Kentucky through the <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonchildrens.com\/foundation\/\">Norton Children\u2019s Hospital Foundation<\/a> and Edie Nixon through the <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/ways-to-help\/norton-healthcare-foundation\/\">Norton Healthcare Foundation<\/a>, who help patients at Norton Hospital and Norton Women\u2019s &amp; Children\u2019s Hospital before, during and after childbirth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaving a safe childbirth experience and reducing maternal mortality rates go hand-in-hand,\u201d Dr. Walker said. \u201cWhen medical providers and the community can come together, we can improve lives.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the sixth time in Kentucky and fifth time in Indiana, Maternal Health Awareness Day will be observed on Jan. 23.
