{"id":1172457,"date":"2026-06-02T13:19:26","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T17:19:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/news\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T13:22:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T17:22:07","slug":"fit-fast-and-asymptomatic-runners-hidden-heart-disease-nearly-went-undetected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/news\/fit-fast-and-asymptomatic-runners-hidden-heart-disease-nearly-went-undetected","title":{"rendered":"Fit, fast and asymptomatic: Runner\u2019s hidden heart disease nearly went undetected"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Terry Griffis laced up his running shoes last August, he had no reason to believe anything was wrong with his heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jeffersonville, Indiana, resident had just turned 60 and was doing what he\u2019d done for years: training, racing and staying active. He ran regularly, ate well and had no chest pain, no shortness of breath and no warning signs that heart disease was quietly building inside his body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was winning my age group in races,\u201d Terry said. \u201cI felt great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What started as a routine annual physical with his Norton Community Medical Associates primary care provider turned into a discovery that may have saved his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that appointment, Terry\u2019s cholesterol numbers were slightly elevated \u2014 nothing unusual for him. A runner who logs hundreds of miles a year, he had always managed borderline numbers through diet and exercise and was hesitant to start a statin medication. His provider, <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.nortonhealthcare.com\/provider\/melissa-s-hardin\/506251\">Melissa S. Hardin, APRN<\/a>, suggested an additional screening: a CT calcium score, a quick scan that measures plaque buildup in the coronary arteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI figured I\u2019d go in, get a zero score, and move on,\u201d Terry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the test revealed a calcium score of 975, a level that immediately raised concern. Follow\u2011up imaging pushed that number even higher, over 1,000, and further testing showed severe blockages in multiple arteries \u2014 despite the fact that Terry had never felt a single symptom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within weeks, he was referred to and seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.nortonhealthcare.com\/provider\/william-r-schmidt-ii\/498260\">William R. Schmidt II, M.D.<\/a>, interventional cardiologist with Norton Heart &amp; Vascular Institute. A heart catheterization confirmed the severity of the disease: three arteries with more than 90% blockage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis kept snowballing,\u201d Terry said. \u201cI went from thinking I might need a stent to being told I needed bypass surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last December, Terry underwent five\u2011vessel coronary artery bypass surgery at Norton Audubon Hospital, performed by <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.nortonhealthcare.com\/provider\/steven-w-etoch\/503650\">Steven W. Etoch, M.D.<\/a>, cardiothoracic surgeon with Norton Heart &amp; Vascular Institute. Just days later, he was walking the hospital halls. By the end of the week, he was home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was walking the next day,\u201d he said. \u201cSurgery on Monday, home by Friday. The care was unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diagnosis was shocking, but the explanation was clear. Terry\u2019s mother died suddenly of a heart attack at age 59. Genetics, doctors explained, had stacked the deck against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t outrun genetics,\u201d Terry said. \u201cRunning probably bought me time \u2014 maybe 10 or 15 years \u2014 but it didn\u2019t make me immune.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What followed surprised even Terry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By February, just two months after surgery, he completed a 5K race. Soon after, he ran additional races and resumed structured training. In April, he ran the Humana Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon, just four months after undergoing open heart surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t feel better now,\u201d Terry said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the strange part. I never felt bad before. I was asymptomatic. That\u2019s what makes this so scary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His story underscores a critical message: Heart disease doesn\u2019t always announce itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople assume if they\u2019re active and feel fine, they\u2019re safe,\u201d Terry said. \u201cI was living proof that\u2019s not always true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His recovery has been steady and closely monitored. Follow\u2011up electrocardiograms and imaging have shown encouraging results. Today, his follow\u2011ups are infrequent, and he tracks his heart rate carefully as he trains \u2014 often using the same smartwatch he once relied on only for pace and mileage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing fit going into surgery made a huge difference,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I also know not everyone is that lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Running has been part of Terry\u2019s life for decades. After returning to the sport seriously in 2010, he gradually increased his mileage, eventually logging more than 1,400 miles in a single year. He\u2019s completed marathons in New York City (2022), Indianapolis (2023) and Chicago (2024), and narrowly missed a Boston Marathon cutoff, which he plans to requalify for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January of last year \u2014 months before his diagnosis \u2014 he even completed a 50\u2011mile ultramarathon on Catalina Island in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s how big a surprise this was,\u201d he said. \u201cI was racing, winning, training hard. I had no clue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are moments now, however, when the weight of what happened breaks through his forward\u2011focused mindset. One came recently during a work trip, as his plane lifted off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI looked down and saw Norton Audubon Hospital,\u201d he said. \u201cI could picture exactly where I was. That hit me. From the providers to cardiologists to ICU [intensive care unit] and PCU [progressive care unit] nursing staffs, I\u2019m only here because of the people who took care of me. They put the care in healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the miniMarathon, Terry said his goal wasn\u2019t a personal record \u2014 it was perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust being there is the win,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His message to others, especially fellow runners, is simple: Don\u2019t assume fitness equals immunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was extremely lucky,\u201d he said. \u201cThis was caught proactively. If it hadn\u2019t been, I might not be here.
