It sits just behind the stomach so the digestive fluids can flow down a tube (pancreatic duct) into the duodenum.&nbsp;The duodenum is the first part of the small bowel and&nbsp;is joined to the stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pancreatic cancer happens when cells of the pancreas change and grow out of control. Most pancreatic cancer starts in the ducts, or tubes, that connect the pancreas to other organs such as the stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two main types of pancreatic tumors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exocrine tumors<\/strong>: This is the most common kind of pancreatic cancer. More than 90% of all pancreatic tumors are exocrine tumors. Exocrine cells make digestive enzymes. The most common type of pancreatic cancer is exocrine adenocarcinoma, which begins in the cells that line the pancreas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neuroendocrine tumors<\/strong>: Less than 10% of pancreatic tumors are neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Endocrine cells make blood sugar-stabilizing hormones like insulin.\u00a0Islet cell carcinoma\u00a0is another name for an NET. Islets are groups of cells in the pancreas that assist in making hormones.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one knows exactly what causes pancreatic cancer, but there are some risk factors that could make it more likely that you will develop one of these types of cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Risk factors for pancreatic adenocarcinoma include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tobacco use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overweight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic pancreatitis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exposure to certain chemicals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Race<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inherited genetic syndromes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The risk factors for pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer are less known, but research suggests these may contribute to this type of cancer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Inherited genetic syndromes: <\/strong>There are three genetic syndromes that may increase a person\u2019s risk of developing a pancreas NET \u2014\u00a0multiple endocrine neoplasia Type 1\u00a0(MEN1),\u00a0neurofibromatosis Type 1\u00a0(NF1), and\u00a0von Hippel-Lindau syndrome\u00a0(VHL). These syndromes can be passed from generation to generation in a family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>other potential risk factors, but the scientific evidence supporting the connection to a pancreas NET is weaker. These include&nbsp;smoking,&nbsp;alcohol, family history of cancer, diabetes and chronic pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signs-and-symptoms-of-pancreatic-cancer\">Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, there are not many early warning signs of pancreatic cancer. The pancreas is deep inside the body, so small tumors can\u2019t be seen or felt by doctors during routine physical exams. Sometimes symptoms do not appear until the cancer begins to affect other organs in the body. These numbers can\u2019t tell you how long you will live, but they may give you a better understanding of how likely it is that your treatment will be successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pancreatic.org\/pancreatic-cancer\/about-the-pancreas\/prognosis\/\">Pancreatic cancer prognosis<\/a> has improved over the last several decades. Prognosis means the likely course of the disease. The earlier the cancer is found, the better your chances at remission (no more signs of pancreatic cancer).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/pancreatic-cancer\/detection-diagnosis-staging\/survival-rates.html\">American Cancer Society<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For all stages of pancreatic cancer combined, the five-year survival rate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/pancreatic-cancer\/detection-diagnosis-staging\/survival-rates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is 12%<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The five-year relative survival rate for localized pancreatic cancer is 44%. Localized means the cancer has not spread outside the pancreas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fewer than 20% of patients\u2019 tumors are confined to the pancreas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancer-types\/pancreatic-cancer.html#:~:text=About%2080%25%20of%20pancreatic%20cancers%20are%20diagnosed%20after,confined%20to%20the%20pancreas%20or%20closely%20surrounding%20areas.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80% of patients<\/a>\u00a0are diagnosed after the disease has reached an advanced stage, making the disease more difficult to treat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approximately 15% to 20% of pancreatic tumors can be surgically removed; if found before metastasis, these tumors tend to show better patient survival rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-coping-with-pancreatic-cancer\">Coping With Pancreatic Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer can be stressful for patients and their families.
