The heart muscle stretches and thins \u2014 dilates \u2014 with the inside of the heart chamber enlarging and becoming less efficient pumping blood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is typically an inherited tendency for the left ventricle to contract and become thicker. As the heart muscle thickens, less blood is taken in and pumped out to the body. The condition often appears in childhood or early adulthood and can cause sudden death in adolescents and young athletes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy is a result of scar tissue replacing healthy heart tissue and causing arrhythmia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restrictive cardiomyopathy is also known as idiopathic cardiomyopathy or infiltrative cardiomyopathy. Typically in older adults, scar tissue can replace healthy muscle and make the heart ventricles stiff, restricting their ability to fill with blood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cardiomyopathy-symptoms\">Cardiomyopathy Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes cardiomyopathy causes no symptoms, or symptoms emerge as the disease progresses. Symptoms can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Irregular heartbeat or palpitations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fainting, or syncope<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swelling in the ankles and legs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cardiomyopathy-treatment\">Cardiomyopathy Treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/heart-and-vascular-care\/programs\/heart-failure\/\">Advanced Heart Failure &amp; Recovery Program<\/a>&nbsp;we use advanced treatments to try to slow the progress of cardiomyopathy and control the symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We start by working with you on dietary changes and other lifestyle adjustments, such as physical activity, stress reduction and reduction of alcohol and other drugs. The increased heart muscle thickness sometimes reduces the flow of blood&nbsp;out of the heart through the outflow tract resulting in chest pain, shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, fatigue or palpitations. It can cause sudden death in adolescents and young athletes.
