With more than 90 providers at 20 locations in Louisville and Southern Indiana, we offer expert prenatal care to ensure a healthy pregnancy journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you choose an OB\/GYN or midwife, here&#8217;s an overview of what to expect during your prenatal appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your pregnancy is complication-free, you can expect to have a prenatal appointment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once a month from four to 28 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every other week from 28 to 36 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weekly from 36 weeks until birth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happens-at-a-prenatal-appointment\">What Happens at a Prenatal Appointment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At every prenatal appointment, your provider likely will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check your weight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take your blood pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collect a urine sample<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listen to fetal heartbeat (starting at around 10 to 12 weeks)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your hands and feet for swelling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measure your belly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-appointment-highlights\">Appointment Highlights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>First appointment <\/b>\u2013 This may include a Pap smear, cervical swab for infection and blood tests. Your provider will review your health history and discuss any genetic or medical risk factors. A due date will be determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Fetal heartbeat <\/b>\u2013 Your practitioner may use Doppler to check your baby\u2019s heartbeat, usually beginning at around 10 to 12 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Ultrasound <\/b>\u2013 A screening ultrasound typically is performed at around 20 weeks. This will help assess your baby\u2019s overall development and may reveal whether you\u2019re having a boy or girl \u2014 assuming you want to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Gestational diabetes <\/b>\u2013 A test to screen for gestational diabetes typically takes place in your provider\u2019s office at around 26 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Pelvic exam.<\/b> At 36 weeks, your provider will perform an exam to assess cervical changes, such as softening, thinning and dilation.
