Unlike most medicines that treat or cure diseases, vaccines prevent them. They work by boosting the immune system\u2019s ability to fight certain infections. Generally, vaccines that contain inactivated viruses can be given during pregnancy. Vaccines that contain live viruses aren\u2019t recommended for pregnant patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vaccinations for Moms-to-be<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain vaccinations (also known as immunizations or shots) are recommended for pregnant patients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Influenza (flu) vaccine.<\/strong>&nbsp;The flu vaccine is recommended for anyone who is pregnant during flu season \u2014 typically November through March. The flu shot is made from an inactivated virus, so it\u2019s safe for both you and your baby. Avoid the influenza nasal spray vaccine, which is made from a live virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tdap vaccine<\/strong>. One dose of the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is given when you\u2019re 27 to 36 weeks pregnant to protect your newborn from whooping cough (pertussis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>COVID-19 vaccine.&nbsp;<\/strong>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all people&nbsp;ages 6 months and older, including people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to get pregnant now, or those who might become pregnant in the future. <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/patient-resources\/norton-now\/covid19-symptoms-vaccination-treatment\/\">Visit our COVID-19 resources page for the latest information<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re traveling abroad or you\u2019re at increased risk for certain infections, your health care provider might recommend other vaccines during pregnancy \u2014 such as the hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some vaccines to avoid during pregnancy include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chickenpox (varicella) vaccine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shingles (varicella zoster) vaccine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grandparents, other family members and caregivers need to make sure they\u2019re up to date on the <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/news\/whooping-cough-vaccine-for-grandparents\/\">whooping cough (pertussis)<\/a> vaccine at least two weeks before meeting a newborn to protect against the potentially deadly disease. The Tdap vaccine for whooping cough and other diseases is available from a primary care provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vaccinations-for-children\">Vaccinations for Children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CDC recommends an immunization schedule designed to protect infants and children early in life, when they are most vulnerable, and before they\u2019re exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child\u2019s vaccination schedule begins at birth with the hepatitis B vaccine. The next set of vaccines is administered at 2 months old. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis [whooping cough])<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IPV (inactivated polio vaccine)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hepatitis B booster<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pneumococcal vaccine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hib (Haemophilus influenzae Type B)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rotavirus vaccine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional vaccinations are given during your baby\u2019s first 18 months and then throughout childhood.
