Our providers are fellowship trained and experienced in HIV treatment. We offer appointments within 72 hours for HIV-positive patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With ongoing treatment and medication, patients with HIV can live a full life. HIV treatment lowers the levels of the virus to the point where the risk of transmitting the disease is effectively zero. With advancements in treatment, an HIV-positive diagnosis does not have to prevent you from living the life you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HIV Testing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HIV testing is important for preventing the spread of HIV and ensuring treatment begins early for individuals who receive a positive HIV test. There are several testing options available, including rapid HIV tests which provide results in 30 minutes or less, while you wait during an office visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can receive an HIV test from your primary care provider, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/locations\/immediate-care-centers\/\">Norton Immediate Care Center<\/a>&nbsp;or a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/locations\/norton-prompt-care\">Norton Prompt Care at Walgreens<\/a>&nbsp;location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you test positive for HIV, your provider can refer you to <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/services-and-conditions\/infectious-disease\/specialists\/\">Norton Infectious Diseases Institute<\/a>&nbsp;for further testing. <a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/news\/hiv-testing-near-me-where-to-go\">Learn more<\/a>&nbsp;about who should be tested and your testing options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV Prevention<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to providing HIV treatment, our infectious disease specialists prescribe and manage the use of preventive HIV medications. These include pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PrEP<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PrEP is used to prevent HIV infection. This drug is prescribed to people who are at high risk for HIV. Taking PrEP daily has shown to be effective at reducing a person\u2019s chances of getting infected. It is less effective when not taken consistently. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), studies show that when taken consistently, <strong>PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by more than 90%, and it can reduce the risk of getting HIV from injecting drugs by 70%.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PrEP, which stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a powerful tool and, combined with condom usage, provides greater protection than condoms alone.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nortonhealthcare.com\/news\/is-this-the-beginning-of-the-end-to-hiv\">Learn more<\/a>. The CDC and the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) gave PrEP a Grade A recommendation, which means this intervention is safe and effective and requires health insurance companies to fully cover the cost of the mediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PEP<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PEP is a post-exposure prophylaxis used to <strong>prevent<\/strong> HIV infection after an exposure or potential exposure. It is used only for emergency situations and must be started within 72 hours after the exposure \u2014 but is most effective when started within 48 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HIV Patient Resources<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning you have HIV can be difficult, so we provide advanced care and comprehensive support.
