A screening mammogram is used to check for abnormalities that can indicate breast cancer in women who have no symptoms. While breast cancer cannot be prevented, screening and early detection may find it early, when it\u2019s more treatable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-breast-cancer-fast-facts\">Breast Cancer Fast Facts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.<\/li><li>About 1% of men are diagnosed with breast cancer.<\/li><li>Early detection reduces deaths from breast cancer.<\/li><li>Women over 40 should get a mammogram yearly.<\/li><li>Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of death in women.<\/li><li>There are over 3 million breast cancer survivors.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-reduce-your-breast-cancer-risk\">How To Reduce Your Breast Cancer Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Exercise most days of the week. Walk, jog, perform yoga \u2014 just be active.<\/li><li>Maintain a healthy weight. Know your body mass index (BMI), and if you are in the obese or morbidly obese range, lose weight.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t smoke. If you do, stop.<\/li><li>Limit how much alcohol you drink.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-feel-something-in-your-breast-what-to-do\">If You Feel Something in Your Breast: What to Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you feel a lump or have other symptoms, call your primary care provider or make an appointment with the Norton Healthcare Mobile Prevention Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-have-a-primary-care-provider\">Why Have a Primary Care Provider<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to have a relationship with a primary care provider. Your primary care provider will oversee your health and keep you on track with staying healthy. If you do not have a primary care provider, ask the staff on the mobile unit or call&nbsp;<strong>(502) 629-1234<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-after-your-norton-healthcare-mobile-prevention-center-visit\">After Your Norton Healthcare Mobile Prevention Center Visit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will receive a letter and\/or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mychart.nortonhealthcare.org\/mychart\/\">MyNortonChart<\/a>&nbsp;notification about your mobile mammogram. If your test results are normal, a time for your next screening will be suggested. Screening mammograms usually are scheduled annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wellness-exams\">Wellness Exams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wellness exam is a comprehensive checkup conducted by a nurse practitioner. The provider will check your vital signs, learn your health history, conduct a physical assessment, examine your breasts and perform a Pap smear to test for cervical cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-an-abnormal-result\">What\u2019s an Abnormal Result?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you receive a call or a letter stating your mammogram is abnormal, don\u2019t panic! This does not mean that you have cancer. About 10% of women need additional imaging following a screening mammogram. Only about 1 in 20 women with abnormal results will receive a cancer diagnosis. Abnormal mammogram results can occur due to the size, shape and density of the breast. An unclear image, calcium deposits or many other reasons can cause an abnormal result without signifying cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An abnormal result does mean that there is something that the doctor sees that needs more images and needs further follow-up.
